a pick me up on a grim Sydney Tuesday - Malaya Magic

While Malaya (http://www.themalaya.com.au/index.html) has long been a part of the Sydney dining scene (having started in a George Street locale in 1963), for some reason it doesn't really feature as a business lunch destination for many of our clients.  Yet its King Street wharf location with water views back across Darling Harbour and walkability to the city makes it perfect.

Add to that a consistently sensational menu and you're on a winner.

Today, a perfect blend of my favourites.

Otak Otak, fish meat blended with a little coconut milk, chili, herbs and grilled in a protective cover of banana leaves.  (tip for young players - DO NOT eat the banana leaf!)

there's a waft of lemon grass and coconut as the Otak Otak arrives
delicate fish "mousse" accented with chili, coconut, and herbs. DEVINE

Apart from the Otak Otak, there's another dish on the menu which I dream of when I dream of the Malaya and that's the Szechuan Eggplant.  If you've never been a fan of eggplant, this will convert you I promise. If you love eggplant, this will have you on your knees.

The eggplant skin is crunchy, reinforced by roasted cashews, the sauce just that little bit spicy, with a cut-through vinegar and chinese water spinach.  As my lovely dining companion M. says "I've never, ever, tasted eggplant like this!" and she's right.  Oh, so right.

Our main is Rendang Chicken, again perfectly balanced with the dry coconut base supporting perfectly cooked chicken.

Just the thing for a surprisingly chilly Sydney mid-week lunch (or spring, or summer).....

There's nowhere else in the Darling Harbour or King St Wharf precinct that i rate - and the wine list is worth a browse.
